Tafseer of The Women · An-Nisaa · 4:50
Look how they invent about Allah untruth, and sufficient is that as a manifest sin.

The explanation of His word: انْظُرْ كَيْفَ يَفْتَرُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ الْكَذِبَ وَكَفَى بِهِ إِثْمًا مُبِينًا ("See how they invent the lie against Allah, and that suffices as a manifest sin") (4:50).
Abū Jaʿfar [al-Ṭabarī] said: He, exalted be His praise, means by this: See, O Muḥammad ﷺ, how these who declare themselves pure among the People of the Book (ahl al-kitāb) invent — those who say: نَحْنُ أَبْنَاءُ اللَّهِ وَأَحِبَّاؤُهُ ("We are the sons of Allah and His beloved ones"), and that no one will enter the Garden (janna) unless he is a Jew or a Christian, those who claim that they have no sins — [how they] invent the lie and the false utterance and fabricate it against Allah. "And that suffices as" — He says: and it is enough for them, that utterance of theirs which is a lie and a falsehood against Allah, "as a manifest sin" — that is, it makes their lie manifest to whoever hears it, and makes clear to them that they are fabricators and immoral ones, as:
9763 — Al-Qāsim related to me, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, concerning أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ يُزَكُّونَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ ("Have you not seen those who declare themselves pure"), he said: these are the Jews and the Christians — "See how they invent the lie against Allah".
