Whoever desires the reward of this world - then with Allah is the reward of this world and the Hereafter. And ever is Allah Hearing and Seeing.

Explanation of His statement: مَنْ كَانَ يُرِيدُ ثَوَابَ الدُّنْيَا فَعِنْدَ اللَّهِ ثَوَابُ الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ سَمِيعًا بَصِيرًا (134) ("Whoever desires the reward of this worldly life — with Allah is the reward of this worldly life and of the Hereafter. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing." (4:134))
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted in praise means by this: "Whoever desires" — from among those who have displayed faith in Muḥammad, the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, belonging to the people of hypocrisy (nifāq), who conceal disbelief in their inner selves while nonetheless displaying faith — "the reward of this worldly life," that is to say: the perishable goods of this world, through displaying the faith that he displayed with his tongue. "With Allah is the reward of this worldly life," that is to say: His requital in this world for that and His reward therein, and that is what he obtains of war booty (ghanīmah) when he takes part in a battle with the Prophet, and his safety for himself, his offspring, and his property, and the like of that. And as for his reward in the Hereafter: it is the fire of Hell (jahannam).
Thus the meaning of the verse is: whoever among those who work in this world, belonging to the hypocrites, desires by his work the reward of this worldly life and its requital for his work, then indeed Allah will requite him with it: his requital in this world from this world, and his requital in the Hereafter from the Hereafter, in punishment and chastisement. That is because Allah is wholly capable of that and is the Owner of all of that, as He said in the other verse: مَنْ كَانَ يُرِيدُ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا وَزِينَتَهَا نُوَفِّ إِلَيْهِمْ أَعْمَالَهُمْ فِيهَا وَهُمْ فِيهَا لا يُبْخَسُونَ * أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ فِي الآخِرَةِ إِلا النَّارُ وَحَبِطَ مَا صَنَعُوا فِيهَا وَبَاطِلٌ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ [Surah Hūd: 15-16] ("Whoever desires the worldly life and its splendor — We will fully repay them their deeds therein, and therein they will not be deprived. Those are the ones for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire; and vain is what they wrought therein, and futile is what they used to do." [Hūd: 15-16]).
And the Exalted in praise meant by this only: those who hastily and recklessly involved themselves in the affair of the Banū Ubayriq, and those whom He described in His statement: وَلا تُجَادِلْ عَنِ الَّذِينَ يَخْتَانُونَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يُحِبُّ مَنْ كَانَ خَوَّانًا أَثِيمًا * يَسْتَخْفُونَ مِنَ النَّاسِ وَلا يَسْتَخْفُونَ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَهُوَ مَعَهُمْ إِذْ يُبَيِّتُونَ مَا لا يَرْضَى مِنَ الْقَوْلِ [Surah An-Nisāʾ: 107, 108] ("And do not plead on behalf of those who betray themselves; indeed, Allah does not love one who is a treacherous betrayer, a sinner. They hide themselves from people, but they do not hide themselves from Allah, while He is with them when they plot by night words that do not please Him." [An-Nisāʾ: 107, 108]), and whoever was like them in their deeds and their hypocrisy.
And His statement "And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing," that is to say: and Allah was Hearing of what these hypocrites say, who desire by their works the reward of this world, and of their displaying to the believers what they display to them when they meet the believers, and their saying to them: "We believe." "All-Seeing," that is to say: and He was Seeing of them and of what they conceal from the believers, of deceit and of the rancor that is in their breasts toward them, which they hide and do not reveal to them.
