And His statement ( Truly, that is indeed the truth ) — He, exalted is His mention, says: Truly, this which I have communicated to you, O people, of report concerning the mutual reproaching of the people of the Fire (al-nār), their cursing of one another, and their supplications against each other in the Fire, is a certain truth, so do not doubt it, but be convinced of it — the mutual disputing of the people of the Fire.

And His statement ( the disputing [takhāṣum] ) is a continuation of His statement ( the truth ), and the meaning of the statement is: truly, the mutual disputing of the people of the Fire about which I have informed you is indeed the truth.

Some of the linguists of Basra explained the meaning of His statement ( or are their gazes turned away? ) as: rather, their gazes are turned away.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement ( Truly, that is indeed the truth, the disputing of the people of the Fire ): and he recited: By Allah, we were indeed in manifest error * when we equated you with the Lord of the worlds (26:97-98). And he recited: And on the Day We gather them all together until he reached: we were indeed heedless of your worship (6:22-23). He said: if you worshipped us, as you claim, then we were indeed heedless of your worship; we did not hear and we did not see. He said: and these are the idols. He said: this is the disputing of the people of the Fire. And he recited: and that which they fabricated strayed away from them (6:24). He said: and on the Day of Resurrection there strayed away from them that which they fabricated in the worldly life.
