The discourse on the explanation of His statement, the Exalted: Qālū rabbanā man qaddama lanā hādhā fa-zid-hu ʿadhāban ḍiʿfan fī al-nār ("They say: Our Lord, whoever prepared this for us, increase for him the punishment doubly in the Fire") (61).
This too is the statement of the multitude who hurl themselves upon the tyrants, and they were in this world the followers of the tyrants. The Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says: and the followers said: Rabbanā man qaddama lanā hādhā ("Our Lord, whoever prepared this for us") — they mean: whoever prepared this for them in this world by calling them to the work that made them deserve the Fire, into which they have entered, and the dwelling of the abode that they have inhabited therein. And by their statement hādhā ("this") they mean: the punishment (ʿadhāb) into which we have entered. Fa-zid-hu ʿadhāban ḍiʿfan fī al-nār ("increase for him the punishment doubly in the Fire") — they say: double for him the punishment (ʿadhāb) in the Fire (al-nār) on top of the punishment in which he already finds himself there. And this too belongs to the supplication of the followers against those whom they followed.
