The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: وَعَجِبُوا أَنْ جَاءَهُمْ مُنْذِرٌ مِنْهُمْ وَقَالَ الْكَافِرُونَ هَذَا سَاحِرٌ كَذَّابٌ ("And they marvelled that a warner had come to them from among themselves, and the unbelievers said: This is a sorcerer, a great liar") (4).

The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: and these polytheists of Quraysh marvelled that a warner had come to them — from their very own midst — warning them of Allah's violence on account of their disbelief in Him, and that an angel did not come to them from heaven with that message. وَقَالَ الْكَافِرُونَ هَذَا سَاحِرٌ كَذَّابٌ ("and the unbelievers said: This is a sorcerer, a great liar") means: and those who deny the oneness of Allah said: this — meaning Muḥammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace — is a sorcerer, a great liar.

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda وَعَجِبُوا أَنْ جَاءَهُمْ مُنْذِرٌ مِنْهُمْ ("and they marvelled that a warner had come to them from among themselves"), he means Muḥammad — may Allah bless him and grant him peace — وَقَالَ الْكَافِرُونَ هَذَا سَاحِرٌ كَذَّابٌ .

Muḥammad related to us, saying: Aḥmad related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning his saying سَاحِرٌ كَذَّابٌ : he means Muḥammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
