And they intended for him a plan, but We made them the most debased.

And His words: فَأَرَادُوا بِهِ كَيْدًا ("Then they devised a plot against him"). The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: the people of Ibrāhīm devised a plot, and that is what they intended: to burn him with fire. Allah says: فَجَعَلْنَاهُمُ ("But We made them"), that is to say: We made the people of Ibrāhīm الأسْفَلِينَ ("the lowest"), that is to say: the most abased in argument; and We made Ibrāhīm triumph over them through the argument, and We saved him from the plot that they had wished to devise against him.
As Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: فَأَرَادُوا بِهِ كَيْدًا فَجَعَلْنَاهُمُ الأسْفَلِينَ ("Then they devised a plot against him, but We made them the lowest"), he said: thereafter he no longer disputed with them until He destroyed them.
