The explanation of His, the Exalted, statement: ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمْ عَلَيْهَا لَشَوْبًا مِنْ حَمِيمٍ ("Then indeed, for them, on top of it, will surely be a mixture of boiling water") (67)
He, the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمْ عَلَيْهَا لَشَوْبًا مِنْ حَمِيمٍ: then these polytheists (mushrikīn), along with what they eat of this tree — the tree of Zaqqūm — will receive a "shawb," that is, a mixture, according to the expression of the Arabs: "shāba fulān ṭaʿāmahu fahuwa yashūbuhu shawban wa shiyāban" (so-and-so mixed his food, he mixes it mixing). مِنْ حَمِيمٍ: and the "ḥamīm" is the heated water, which is warmed until its heat has reached the utmost; its original form is a passive participle (mafʿūl) that has been converted into the form faʿīl.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
