The statement concerning the explanation of His saying, the Exalted: yaqūlu aʾinnaka la-mina al-muṣaddiqīna (52) ("he says: do you really belong to those who hold it to be true?")

Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥabīb ibn al-Shahīd related to me, he said: ʿAttāb ibn Bishr related to us, on the authority of Khaṣīf, on the authority of Furāt ibn Thaʿlaba al-Bahrānī, concerning His saying innī kāna lī qarīnun ("verily, I had a companion"): he said: there were two men who were business partners, and together they gathered eight thousand dinars. One of them had a trade, the other had no trade. The one with the trade said to the other: you have no trade; I think I can do nothing but separate myself from you and divide with you. So he divided with him and separated from him. Then the man bought a house for a thousand dinars, which had belonged to a king who had died. He summoned his companion and showed it to him, and said: how do you find this house? I bought it for a thousand dinars. He said: how beautiful it is. When he departed, he (the other) said: O Allah, my companion has bought this house for a thousand dinars, and I ask You for a house from among the houses of paradise (janna), and he gave a thousand dinars as alms (ṣadaqa). Then he remained as long as Allah willed him to remain. Then he (the first) married a woman for a thousand dinars, and he summoned him and prepared a meal for him. When he came to him, he said: I have married this woman for a thousand dinars. He said: how beautiful this is. When he went away, he said: O Lord, my companion has married a woman for a thousand dinars, and I ask You for a woman from among the wide-eyed maidens of heaven (al-ḥūr al-ʿīn), and he gave a thousand dinars as alms. Then he remained as long as Allah willed him to remain. After that he (the first) bought two gardens for two thousand dinars, and summoned him and showed it to him, and said: I have bought these two gardens. He said: how beautiful this is. When he departed, he said: O Lord, my companion has bought two gardens for two thousand dinars, and I ask You for two gardens from paradise, and he gave two thousand dinars as alms. Then the angel (al-malak) came to them both and took away their souls. After that this giver of alms was carried off and led into a house that pleased him, and behold, there appeared a woman, and what was beneath her shone with her beauty. After that he was led into two gardens, and something of which Allah has the knowledge. He then said: how much this resembles a man whose affair was such and such. It was said: that is indeed he, and for you is this dwelling and the two gardens and the woman. He said: I had a companion who used to say: aʾinnaka la-mina al-muṣaddiqīna ("do you really belong to those who hold it to be true?"). It was said to him: he is in the Hellfire (al-jaḥīm). He said: fa-hal antum muṭṭaliʿūna ("can you then cast a glance?"). Then he cast a glance and saw him in the midst of the Hellfire. He then said: ta-llāhi in kidta la-turdīni * wa-lawlā niʿmatu rabbī la-kuntu mina al-muḥḍarīna ("by Allah, you almost ruined me; and were it not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been among those brought forth") ... to the end of the verses. And this explanation which Furāt ibn Thaʿlaba gave strengthens the reading of those who read "innaka la-mina al-muṣṣaddiqīna" with doubling of the ṣād, in the meaning of: those who give alms (al-mutaṣaddiqīn), because he mentions that Allah, the Exalted, gave him only what He gave him on the basis of the alms (ṣadaqa) and not on the basis of the holding-to-be-true (taṣdīq). The reading of the reciters of the great cities, however, goes against that; rather, their reading is with lightening of the ṣād and doubling of the dāl (al-muṣaddiqīn), in the meaning of: the denial by his companion against him of holding it to be true that he would be resurrected after death, as if he said: do you hold it to be true that you will be resurrected after your death, that you will be recompensed for your deed and called to account?
