Tafseer of Those drawn up in Ranks · As-Saaffaat · 37:3
And those who recite the message,

And His statement ( فَالتَّالِيَاتِ ذِكْرًا ) ("and by those who recite a reminder"): He says: and by those who recite a Scripture.
The scholars of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) differed concerning what is meant by this. Some of them said: they are the angels.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us, all on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid ( فالتاليات ذكرا ), he said: the angels.
Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Aḥmad ibn al-Mufaḍḍal related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī ( فالتاليات ذكرا ), he said: they are the angels.
And others said: it is that which is recited in the Qurʾān of reports about the nations before us.
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda ( فَالتَّالِيَاتِ ذِكْرًا ), he said: that which is recited to you in the Qurʾān about the reports of the people and the nations before you.
