مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهْدُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ

Other than Allah, and guide them to the path of Hellfire

    وَمَا كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ (٢٢) مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ فَاهْدُوهُمْ إِلَى صِرَاطِ الْجَحِيمِ (٢٣) (and what they used to worship (22) besides Allah; then guide them to the path of Hellfire (23)).

    In these words there is something omitted, the mention of which was deemed superfluous on the strength of the indication of what is in fact stated; and that is: then it is said: "Gather those who have committed wrong." Its meaning is: bring together those who in the worldly life were unbelieving with regard to Allah and disobedient to Him, along with their likes and their followers, in the condition of unbelief toward Allah in which they were, and what they used to worship besides Allah as gods.

    And the exegetes have said something similar to what we have said about this.

    ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ (Gather those who have committed wrong and their spouses/counterparts): he says: their peers.

    Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning his words احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ (Gather those who have committed wrong and their spouses): he said: their likes in deeds, and he recited وَكُنْتُمْ أَزْوَاجًا ثَلَاثَةً فَأَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ. وَأَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ (And you will be three groups: the companions of the right hand — what are the companions of the right hand! And the companions of the left hand — what are the companions of the left hand! And the foremost, the foremost). So the foremost are a group, the companions of the right hand are a group, and the companions of the left hand are a group. He said: everyone who belonged to one of these, that one Allah gathered with him. And he recited وَإِذَا النُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ (And when the souls are joined together): he said: they are joined together on the basis of deeds; for each of these there is a like. Allah joined some of them together with others: He joined the companions of the right side with the companions of the right side, the companions of the left hand with the companions of the left hand, and the foremost with the foremost. He said: this then is His word احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ (Gather those who have committed wrong and their likes): he said: the likes in deeds whom Allah has joined together with them.

    Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, his words وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ (and their likes): he said: their counterparts.

    And His word وَمَا كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ فَاهْدُوهُمْ إِلَى صِرَاطِ الْجَحِيمِ (and what they used to worship besides Allah; then guide them to the path of Hellfire): He, exalted be His mention, says: gather these polytheists (mushrikīn) and their gods which they used to worship besides Allah, and lead them to the path of Hellfire.

    And the exegetes have said something similar to what we have said about this.

    وَمَا كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ (٢٢) مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ فَاهْدُوهُمْ إِلَى صِرَاطِ الْجَحِيمِ (٢٣)﴾ وفي هذا الكلام متروك استغني بدلالة ما ذكر عما ترك، وهو: فيقال: احشروا الذين ظلموا، ومعنى ذلك اجمعوا الذين كفروا بالله في الدنيا وعصوه وأزواجهم وأشياعهم على ما كانوا عليه من الكفر بالله وما كانوا يعبدون من دون الله من الآلهة. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا ابن بشار، قال: ثنا عبد الرحمن، قال: ثنا سفيان، عن سماك بن حرب، عن النعمان بن بشير، عن عمر بن الخطاب (احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ) قال: ضرباءهم. حدثني عليّ، قال: ثنا أبو صالح، قال: ثني معاوية، عن عليّ، عن ابن عباس (احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجهُمْ) يقول: نظراءهم. حدثني محمد بن سعد، قال: ثني أبي، قال: ثني عمي، قال: ثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن ابن عباس قوله (احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ) يعني: أتباعهم، ومن أشبههم من الظلمة. حدثنا محمد بن المثني، قال: ثنا ابن أبي عديّ، عن داود، قال: سألت أبا العالية، عن قول الله: (احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ) قال: الذين ظلموا وأشياعهم. حدثنا ابن المثنى، قال: ثني عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا داود، عن أبي العالية، أنه قال في هذه الآية، (احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ) قال: وأشياعهم. حدثني يعقوب بن إبراهيم، قال: ثنا ابن علية، قال: ثنا داود، عن أبي العالية مثله. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة، قوله (احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأزْوَاجهُمْ): أي وأشياعهم الكفار مع الكفار. حدثني محمد بن الحسين، قال: ثنا أحمد بن المفضل، قال: ثنا أسباط، عن السدي، في قوله: (احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأزْوَاجهُمْ) قال: وأشباههم. حدثني يونس، قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: قال ابن زيد، في قوله (احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأزْوَاجهُمْ) قال: أزواجهم في الأعمال، وقرأ (وكُنْتُمْ أزْوَاجا ثَلاثَةً فَأصحَابُ المَيْمَنَةِ ما أصحَابُ المَيْمَنَةِ. وَأَصْحَابُ المَشأَمَةِ ما أصحَابُ المَشْأمةِ وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ) فالسابقون زوج وأصحاب الميمنة زوج، وأصحاب الشمال زوج، قال: كل من كان من هذا حشره الله معه. وقرأ: (وَإِذَا النُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ) قال: زوجت على الأعمال، لكل واحد من هؤلاء زوج، زوج الله بعض هؤلاء بعضا، زوج أصحاب اليمين أصحاب اليمين، وأصحاب المشأمة أصحاب المشأمة، والسابقين السابقين، قال: فهذا قوله (احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ) قال: أزواج الأعمال التي زوجهن الله. حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى; وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء جميعا، عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، قوله (وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ) قال: أمثالهم. وقوله (وَمَا كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ فَاهْدُوهُمْ إلى صِراطِ الجَحِيمِ) يقول تعالى ذكره: احشروا هؤلاء المشركين وآلهتهم التي كانوا يعبدونها من دون الله، فوجهوهم إلى طريق الجحيم. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل.
