The explanation of His statement, the Exalted: فَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِغُلَامٍ حَلِيمٍ ("Then We gave him the glad tidings of a forbearing boy") (101)

He, the Exalted, whose mention is sublime, says: and We gave Ibrāhīm the glad tidings of a forbearing boy, that is to say: a boy who possesses forbearance (ḥilm) when he has grown up; as for his childhood in the cradle, however, he is not described therewith. And it has been mentioned that the boy of whom Allah gave Ibrāhīm the glad tidings was Isḥāq.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Yaḥyā ibn Wāḍiḥ related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, on the authority of Yazīd, on the authority of ʿIkrima: فَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِغُلَامٍ حَلِيمٍ, he said: that is Isḥāq.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda فَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِغُلَامٍ حَلِيمٍ: he received the glad tidings of Isḥāq. He said: with forbearance (ḥilm) no one is praised except Isḥāq and Ibrāhīm.
