Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

The statement concerning the explanation of His word, the Exalted: وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَإِذَا هُمْ مِنَ الأَجْدَاثِ إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَنْسِلُونَ ("And the Trumpet will be blown, and at once from the graves they will hasten to their Lord") (51)

The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ ("and the Trumpet will be blown") — and we have already previously mentioned the disagreement of those who dispute &; 20-531 &; and the correct ruling thereon with its proofs, in a manner that makes repetition in this place superfluous — and by this blowing is meant the blowing of the resurrection.

And His statement فَإِذَا هُمْ مِنَ الأجْدَاثِ ("and at once from the graves") means: from their graves (ajdāth), and these are their graves; the singular of it is jadath. And concerning it there exist two linguistic forms: the people of the highland (ahl al-ʿĀliya) say it with the thāʾ: jadath, while the people of the lowland (ahl al-Sāfila) say it with the fāʾ: jadaf.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning that, the scholars of exegesis have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement مِنَ الأجْدَاثِ إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَنْسِلُونَ , he says: from the graves.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning فَإِذَا هُمْ مِنَ الأجْدَاثِ : that is to say: from the graves.

And His statement إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَنْسِلُونَ ("to their Lord they hasten"): he says: to their Lord they come out hurriedly; and al-nasalān is hastening in walking.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning that, the scholars of exegesis have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement يَنْسِلُونَ , he says: they come out.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَنْسِلُونَ : that is to say: they come out.
