The statement concerning the explanation of His words, the Exalted: قَالُوا إِنَّا تَطَيَّرْنَا بِكُمْ لَئِنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهُوا لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْ وَلَيَمَسَّنَّكُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ (They said: Indeed, we augur ill from you; if you do not desist, we will surely stone you, and a painful punishment from us will surely afflict you) (36:18)
The Exalted, whose remembrance is sublime, says: the inhabitants of the city said to the messengers إِنَّا تَطَيَّرْنَا بِكُمْ (Indeed, we augur ill from you), by which they mean: we regard you as an evil omen; if a calamity befalls us, then it is because of you.
As Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda قَالُوا إِنَّا تَطَيَّرْنَا بِكُمْ (They said: Indeed, we augur ill from you), they said: if evil befalls us, then it is only because of you.
And His words لَئِنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهُوا لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْ (If you do not desist, we will surely stone you), He says: if you do not desist from that which you have mentioned — namely that you have been sent to us with the rejection of our gods and the prohibition of worshipping them — then we will surely stone you. It has been said: by this is meant: we will surely stone you with stones.
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda لَئِنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهُوا لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْ (If you do not desist, we will surely stone you): with stones وَلَيَمَسَّنَّكُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ (and a painful punishment from us will surely afflict you), he says: and a painful punishment (ʿadhāb) from us will afflict you.
