Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His words (And they said: All praise is due to Allah, who has removed grief from us). He said: they used to labor and toil in the worldly life while in fear, or they were grieved.

And others said: no, rather what is meant by it is the grief that befalls the one who wronged himself at the standing place of the Resurrection.

    * Mention of who said that:

Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: Abū Aḥmad related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of al-Aʿmash, who said: Abū Thābit mentioned that Abū al-Dardāʾ said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "As for the one who wronged himself, distress and grief befall him at that place, and that is His words الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَذْهَبَ عَنَّا الْحَزَنَ (All praise is due to Allah, who has removed grief from us)."

And the most correct of the statements concerning this is that one says: indeed Allah, exalted is His mention, has informed concerning that people whom He honored with that wherewith He honored them, that they, when they entered the Garden (janna), said: (All praise is due to Allah, who has removed grief from us) — and the fear of entering the Fire (al-nār) is among grief, and the dread of death is among grief, and the dread of need for food is among grief. And when Allah informed concerning them, He did not single out one kind of grief over another when He informed that they praised Him for the removal of grief from them; rather, He informed concerning them that with that statement they encompassed all kinds of grief. And so it is, for whoever enters the Garden, no grief remains upon him thereafter. Thus He praised them for the removal of all the meanings of grief from them.

And His words إِنَّ رَبَّنَا لَغَفُورٌ شَكُورٌ (Indeed our Lord is truly Most Forgiving, Most Appreciative). He, exalted is His mention, says, informing concerning the statement of these categories whom He informed He had chosen from among His servants, upon their entering the Garden: indeed our Lord is truly Most Forgiving toward the sins of His servants who repented of their sins, so that He covered them for them by absolving them of them, Most Appreciative toward them for their obedience to Him and for the good deeds they had sent ahead in the worldly life.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His words (Indeed our Lord is truly Most Forgiving, Most Appreciative): toward their good deeds.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Yaʿqūb related to us, on the authority of Ḥafṣ, on the authority of Shimr (Indeed our Lord is truly Most Forgiving, Most Appreciative): He forgave them what there was of sin, and He was appreciative toward them for what proceeded from them.
