And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned have certainly born upon themselves a slander and manifest sin.

And His statement (And those who hurt the believers) — Mujāhid used to direct the meaning of His statement (hurt, yuʾdhūna) toward "they slander" (yaqifūna).
Mention of the narration concerning that:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid (And those who hurt) he said: they slander.
The meaning of the word, according to what Mujāhid said, is therefore: And those who hurt the believing men and the believing women and revile them, seeking out their disgrace, (without their having earned anything) — he says: without their having done anything.
As Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement (without their having earned anything) he said: having done.
Naṣr ibn ʿAlī related to us, saying: ʿAtthām ibn ʿAlī related to us, on the authority of al-Aʿmash, on the authority of Mujāhid, he said: Ibn ʿUmar recited: (And those who hurt the believing men and the believing women without their having earned anything, they indeed bear slander and manifest sin). He said: How then, when someone is hurt for something good (that he has done)? Then the punishment is doubled for him.
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: ʿAtthām ibn ʿAlī related to us, on the authority of al-Aʿmash, on the authority of Thawr, on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar (And those who hurt the believing men and the believing women without their having earned anything) he said: How then with the one who does good to them?
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda (And those who hurt the believing men and the believing women without their having earned anything, they indeed bear slander and manifest sin) — so beware of hurting the believer, for Allah surrounds him with protection and becomes wrathful on his behalf.
And His statement (they indeed bear slander and manifest sin) says: they indeed bear falsehood, lying, and a hideous fabrication. And buhtān (slander) is: the grossest lie. (and manifest sin) says: and a sin that makes clear to whoever hears it that it is a sin and falsehood.
