The discourse on the explanation of His statement, the Exalted: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ لَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا مُهِينًا ("Indeed, those who harm Allah and His Messenger: Allah has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating punishment") (33:57).
He, exalted is His mention, says: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ اللَّهَ ("Indeed, those who harm Allah"), that is, those who harm their Lord through their disobedience to Him and their committing of what He has forbidden them. And it has been said: that what is meant by this are the makers of images (aṣḥāb al-taṣāwīr); and that is because they strive to create a creation like the creation of Allah.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd al-Qurashī related to me, saying: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Salama ibn al-Ḥajjāj, on the authority of ʿIkrima, who said: those who harm Allah and His Messenger are the makers of images.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ لَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا مُهِينًا ("Indeed, those who harm Allah and His Messenger: Allah has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating punishment"). He said: O, glory be to Allah! Time and again there were ignorant people among the children of Adam, until they applied themselves to harming their Lord. And as for their harming of the Messenger of Allah, Allah's peace and blessings be upon him (ﷺ), that was their slander against him on account of his marriage to Ṣafiyya bint Ḥuyayy, as has been transmitted.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ لَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا مُهِينًا ("Indeed, those who harm Allah and His Messenger: Allah has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating punishment"). He said: it was revealed concerning those who slandered the Prophet, Allah's peace and blessings be upon him (ﷺ), when he took Ṣafiyya bint Ḥuyayy ibn Akhṭab as wife.
And His statement لَعَنَهُمُ اللهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ ("Allah has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter"). He, exalted is His mention, says: Allah has removed them from His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, and has prepared for them in the Hereafter a punishment that humiliates them therein through the eternal abiding therein.
