And His statement: وَلَمَّا رَأَى الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الأحْزَابَ (And when the believers saw the confederates) means: And when the believers in Allah and His Messenger beheld the multitudes of the disbelievers (kuffār), they said — out of their submission to the command of Allah, and out of their certainty that this was the fulfillment of His promise to them, which He had promised them with His statement: Or did you suppose that you would enter Paradise while there has not yet come to you the like of those who passed away before you ... up to His statement: near — This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth. So Allah praised them for that with commendation, for their certainty and their submission to His command, and He said: And the gathering of the confederates against them increased them in nothing but faith in Allah and submission to His decree and His command, and through that He granted them victory and triumph over the enemies.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: My father related to me, saying: My uncle related to me, saying: My father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement: And when the believers saw the confederates ... the ayah, he said: That was because Allah had said to them in Sūrat al-Baqara: Or did you suppose that you would enter Paradise ... up to His statement: Verily, the help of Allah is near. He said: So when the calamity befell them, while they were confronting the confederates at the trench (al-khandaq), the believers interpreted it thus, and it increased them in nothing but faith and submission.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, saying: Yazīd ibn Rūmān related to me, saying: Then he mentioned the believers and their sincerity and their belief in what Allah had promised them of the trial with which He tested them: They said: This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth, and it increased them in nothing but faith and submission: that is, patience at the trial, and submission to the decree, and affirmation of the realization of what Allah and His Messenger had promised them.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: And when the believers saw the confederates, they said: This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth. And Allah had promised them in Sūrat al-Baqara and said: Or did you suppose that you would enter Paradise, while there has not yet come to you the like of those who passed away before you? Adversity and calamity touched them, and they were so shaken that the Messenger and those who believed with him — the best of them, the most patient of them and the most knowledgeable of them concerning Allah — said: When will the help of Allah come? Verily, the help of Allah is near. This, by Allah, was the trial and the severe affliction, and indeed, when the companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw what befell them of hardship and trial, they said: This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth, and it increased them in nothing but faith and submission, and affirmation of what Allah had promised them, and submission to the decree of Allah.
