And His statement: هُنالكَ ابْتُلِيَ المُؤْمِنُونَ (There the believers were tested). He says: on that occasion the faith of the believers was tested, and the people were purified, and the believer was distinguished from the hypocrite (munāfiq).
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Waraqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, His statement: هُنالكَ ابْتُلِيَ المُؤْمِنُونَ (There the believers were tested). He said: they were purified.
And His statement: وَزُلْزِلُوا زِلْزَالا شَدِيدًا (and they were shaken with a severe shaking). He says: and they were severely shaken by the trial, and they were tried and tested.
