The discourse on the explanation of His statement, the Exalted: إِنَّمَا يُؤْمِنُ بِآيَاتِنَا الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِّرُوا بِهَا خَرُّوا سُجَّدًا وَسَبَّحُوا بِحَمْدِ رَبِّهِمْ وَهُمْ لا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ (15) (Only those believe in Our signs who, when they are reminded of them, fall down in prostration and glorify the praise of their Lord, and who do not behave arrogantly.) (15)
He, exalted is His mention, says: No one affirms Our proofs and the signs of Our Book as true except the people who, when they are reminded and admonished by them, fall down to the ground before Allah in prostration (sujūd) upon their faces, out of humility toward Him, out of submission to His greatness, and out of acknowledgment toward Him of servitude (ʿubūdiyya). And they glorify the praise of their Lord (sabbaḥū bi-ḥamdi rabbihim), that is to say: and they glorify Allah in their prostration with His praise, so that they declare Him free of that with which the people of unbelief (kufr) describe Him, and of what they ascribe to Him of a wife, children, partners, and equals. And who do not behave arrogantly, that is to say: they do that while they are not too proud for the prostration before Him and the glorification, and they do not arrogantly refuse the humility toward Him and the submission.
It is said: this āyah was revealed to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, because a group of the hypocrites (munāfiqīn) used to leave the mosque when the prayer was being set up. That has been mentioned on the authority of Ḥajjāj, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj.
