Tafseer of The Prostration · As-Sajda · 32:14

So taste [punishment] because you forgot the meeting of this, your Day; indeed, We have [accordingly] forgotten you. And taste the punishment of eternity for what you used to do."

    The explanation of the statement of the Exalted: فَذُوقُوا بِمَا نَسِيتُمْ لِقَاءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا إِنَّا نَسِينَاكُمْ وَذُوقُوا عَذَابَ الْخُلْدِ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ (14)

(So taste, because you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours. Verily, We have forgotten you. And taste the punishment (ʿadhāb) of eternity, for what you used to do. (14))

The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: to these polytheists (mushrikīn) who ascribe partners to Allah it will be said, when they enter the Fire (al-nār): taste the punishment (ʿadhāb) of Allah, because you forgot in the worldly life the meeting of this Day of yours. إنَّا نَسِيناكُمْ ("Verily, We have forgotten you"), He says: verily, We have left you behind today in the Fire.

And His statement: وَذُوقُوا عَذَابَ الخُلْدِ ("And taste the punishment of eternity"), He says: to them it will also be said: taste a punishment in which you will abide forever without end, بِما كُنْتُمْ ("for what you") in the worldly life تَعْمَلُونَ ("used to do") of disobedience toward Allah.

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: فَذُوقُوا بِمَا نَسِيتُمْ لِقَاءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا إِنَّا نَسِينَاكُمْ ("So taste, because you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours. Verily, We have forgotten you"), he said: they were forgotten with respect to all good, but with respect to evil they were not forgotten.

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement: إنَّا نَسِيناكُمْ ("Verily, We have forgotten you"), he says: We have left you behind.
