۞ وَمَن يُسْلِمْ وَجْهَهُۥٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحْسِنٌۭ فَقَدِ ٱسْتَمْسَكَ بِٱلْعُرْوَةِ ٱلْوُثْقَىٰ ۗ وَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلْأُمُورِ

And whoever submits his face to Allah while he is a doer of good - then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold. And to Allah will be the outcome of [all] matters.

    The discourse on the explanation of His statement, the Exalted: وَمَنْ يُسْلِمْ وَجْهَهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحْسِنٌ فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَى وَإِلَى اللَّهِ عَاقِبَةُ الأُمُورِ (22) (And whoever submits his face to Allah while he is a doer of good, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold. And to Allah belongs the outcome of all matters (31:22)).

    He, exalted is His mention, says: and whoever submits his face in servitude, humbling himself in worship, acknowledging Him in His divinity, (while he is a doer of good) — He says: while he is obedient to Allah in what He commands and forbids — (then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold) — He says: then he has held fast to the firmest end, which the one who holds fast to it need not fear that it will break. This is a parable; by it is meant only: that he, through Allah's good pleasure, has held fast — by submitting his face to Him while he is a doer of good — to that by which he need not fear the punishment (ʿadhāb) of Allah on the Day of Resurrection.

    And as for what we have said concerning this, so the exegetes have said.

    * Mention of those who said that:

    Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, saying: my father related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Abī al-Sawdāʾ, on the authority of Jaʿfar ibn Abī al-Mughīra, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: (And whoever submits his face to Allah while he is a doer of good, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold). He said: there is no god but Allah.

    And His statement: (And to Allah belongs the outcome of all matters) — He says: and to Allah belongs the return of the outcome of every matter, its good and its evil, and He is the one who questions their people about it and requites them for it.

    القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : وَمَنْ يُسْلِمْ وَجْهَهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحْسِنٌ فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَى وَإِلَى اللَّهِ عَاقِبَةُ الأُمُورِ (22) يقول تعالى ذكره: ومن يُعبِّد وجهه متذللا بالعبودة، مقرّا له بالألوهة (وَهُوَ مُحْسِنٌ) يقول: وهو مطيع لله في أمره ونهيه، ( فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَى ) يقول: &; 20-150 &; فقد تمسك بالطرف الأوثق الذي لا يخاف انقطاعه من تمسك به، وهذا مثل، وإنما يعني بذلك: أنه قد تمسك من رضا الله بإسلامه وجهه إليه وهو محسن، ما لا يخاف معه عذاب الله يوم القيامة. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا ابن وكيع، قال: ثنا أبي، عن سفيان، عن أبي السوداء، عن جعفر بن أبي المغيرة، عن سعيد بن جُبَير، عن ابن عباس ( وَمَنْ يُسْلِمْ وَجْهَهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحْسِنٌ فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَى ) قال: لا إله إلا الله. وقوله: ( وَإِلَى اللَّهِ عَاقِبَةُ الأمُورِ ) يقول: وإلى الله مرجع عاقبة كلّ أمر خيره وشرّه، وهو المسائل أهله عنه، ومجازيهم عليه.
