The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: فَاصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَلا يَسْتَخِفَّنَّكَ الَّذِينَ لا يُوقِنُونَ ("So be patient; verily, the promise of Allah is true, and let not those who are without certainty cause you to waver") (30:60).

The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: So be patient, O Muhammad, with the harm that befalls you from them, and convey to them the message of your Lord, for the promise of Allah which He has promised you — of victory over them, and triumph over them, and establishing you and establishing your companions and your followers upon the earth — is true. وَلا يسْتَخِفَّنَّك الَّذِينَ لا يُوقِنُونَ ("and let not those who are without certainty cause you to waver") — He says: and let not these polytheists (mushrikīn) who associate partners with Allah, who are without certainty regarding the Return and who do not hold as true the Resurrection after death, cause your forbearance and your judgement to waver, so that they would turn you away from the cause of Allah and from carrying out that which He has obligated upon you, namely the conveying of His message to them.

Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, saying: my father related to us, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Rabīʿa, that a man of the Khawārij recited behind ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him: لَئِنْ أَشْرَكْتَ لَيَحْبَطَنَّ عَمَلُكَ وَلَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ ("If you associate partners, your work will surely come to nothing and you will surely be among the losers"), whereupon ʿAlī said: فَاصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَلا يَسْتَخِفَّنَّكَ الَّذِينَ لا يُوقِنُونَ ("So be patient; verily, the promise of Allah is true, and let not those who are without certainty cause you to waver").

He said: Yaḥyā ibn Ādam related to us, on the authority of Sharīk, on the authority of ʿUthmān ibn Abī Zurʿa, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Rabīʿa, he said: a man of the Khawārij called out to ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, while he was performing the dawn prayer (ṣalāh al-fajr), and said: وَلَقَدْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ وَإِلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ لَئِنْ أَشْرَكْتَ لَيَحْبَطَنَّ عَمَلُكَ وَلَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ ("And indeed, it has been revealed to you and to those before you: if you associate partners, your work will surely come to nothing and you will surely be among the losers"). Then ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, answered him while he was in the prayer: فَاصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَلا يَسْتَخِفَّنَّكَ الَّذِينَ لا يُوقِنُونَ ("So be patient; verily, the promise of Allah is true, and let not those who are without certainty cause you to waver").

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, regarding فَاصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَلا يَسْتَخِفَّنَّكَ الَّذِينَ لا يُوقِنُونَ ("So be patient; verily, the promise of Allah is true, and let not those who are without certainty cause you to waver"), he said: a man of the Khawārij said behind ʿAlī in the dawn prayer: وَلَقَدْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ وَإِلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ لَئِنْ أَشْرَكْتَ لَيَحْبَطَنَّ عَمَلُكَ وَلَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ ("And indeed, it has been revealed to you and to those before you: if you associate partners, your work will surely come to nothing and you will surely be among the losers"). Then ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, listened to him silently until he understood what he was saying; and he answered him while he was in the prayer: فَاصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَلا يَسْتَخِفَّنَّكَ الَّذِينَ لا يُوقِنُونَ ("So be patient; verily, the promise of Allah is true, and let not those who are without certainty cause you to waver").
