Tabari

Tafseer of The Romans · Ar-Room · 30:38

So give the relative his right, as well as the needy and the traveler. That is best for those who desire the countenance of Allah, and it is they who will be the successful.

The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: Geef dan de verwant zijn recht, en de behoeftige en de reiziger; dat is beter voor hen die het aangezicht van Allah begeren, en zij zijn het die welslagen (38).

The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: So give, O Muḥammad, to whoever among your kinsfolk it may be his right that is due to him from you in maintaining the bond of kinship and in benevolence, and to the needy one (al-miskīn) and the traveler (ibn al-sabīl) what Allah has prescribed for them therein.

As Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, he said: Ghundar related to us, on the authority of ʿAwf, on the authority of al-Ḥasan: Geef dan de verwant zijn recht, en de behoeftige en de reiziger. He said: it is that you give them their right in full if you are in prosperity; and if you possess nothing, then say to them a kind word; speak to them what is good.

And His saying: dat is beter voor hen die het aangezicht van Allah begeren. The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: the giving to these of their rights which Allah has imposed upon His servants is better for those who by that giving desire Allah. En zij zijn het die welslagen — He says: and whoever does that while seeking thereby the Face of Allah, they are the ones who succeed, who attain their desires with Allah, who win what they sought and pursued by giving to them what they gave.
