Then the end of those who did evil was the worst [consequence] because they denied the signs of Allah and used to ridicule them.

The explanation of the words of the Exalted: ثُمَّ كَانَ عَاقِبَةَ الَّذِينَ أَسَاءُوا السُّوءَى أَنْ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَكَانُوا بِهَا يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ (10) (Then the end of those who did evil was the most evil, because they denied the signs of Allah and used to mock them.) (10)
The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: Then the end of the affair of whoever among these was an unbeliever — those who plowed the earth and made it habitable, and to whom their messengers came with the clear proofs concerning Allah, and who denied their messengers — they thereby did evil with their deeds.
السُّوءَى (the most evil): by this is meant the state that is even more evil than their deeds; as for the worldly life, that is ruin and destruction, and as for the Hereafter, that is the Fire, from which they will not be removed, nor will they be asked to please God.
And similar to what we have said about this, the exegetes have said.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His words: ثُمَّ كَانَ عَاقِبَةَ الَّذِينَ أَسَاءُوا السُّوءَى (Then the end of those who did evil was the most evil): those who ascribed partners — the most evil, that is to say: the Fire.
ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His words: ثُمَّ كَانَ عَاقِبَةَ الَّذِينَ أَسَاءُوا السُّوءَى (Then the end of those who did evil was the most evil), he says: those who were unbelievers — their requital is the punishment.
And some of the philologists said: as-sūʾā in this place is a verbal noun (maṣdar), like al-buqyā. Others diverged from that and said: it is a substantive noun.
And His words: أَن كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِ اللهِ (because they denied the signs of Allah) means: the most evil was for them, because in the worldly life they denied the signs of Allah, وَكَانُوا بِهَا يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ (and used to mock them). He says: and they mocked the proofs of Allah, and His prophets and messengers.
