The statement concerning the interpretation of His saying: "And whoever turns away after that, they are the corrupt ones (al-fāsiqūn)." (3:82)
Abū Jaʿfar said: He — exalted is His praise — means by this: And whoever turns away from belief in My messengers, whom I have sent to confirm the Books and the wisdom that were with My prophets, and turns away from supporting them, and thus turns his back and does not believe in that and gives no support, and breaks his covenant and his compact — "after that," that is to say: after the covenant and the compact that Allah has taken from him — "they are the corrupt ones." He means by this: that those who turn away from belief in the messengers whose matter He has described, and from supporting them, after the covenant and the compact that were taken over them to that effect — "they are the corrupt ones." He means by that: those who depart from the religion of Allah and from obedience to their Lord.

Abū Jaʿfar said: And these two verses, although the starting point of the report in them proceeds from Allah, mighty and exalted, concerning that of which He has informed that He made it witnessed and concerning which He took the covenant from whom He took the covenant, regarding His prophets and messengers — yet what is intended by them is: informing those who, in the time of the life of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, dwelt around his place of emigration, among the Jews of the Banū Isrāʾīl, about what Allah held due from them of the covenant concerning belief in the prophethood of Muḥammad ﷺ. And what is intended by it is: reminding them of what Allah had taken from their fathers and their predecessors of compacts and covenants, and of what the prophets of Allah had made known to them and had enjoined upon them beforehand concerning holding him to be truthful, following him, and supporting him against whoever contradicted and belied him — and giving them knowledge of what is in the Books of Allah, which He sent down to His prophets whom He had sent to them, of his description and his mark.
