Tafseer of The Family of Imraan · Aal-i-Imraan · 3:71
O People of the Scripture, why do you confuse the truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know [it]?
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
The explanation of His word: يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لِمَ تَلْبِسُونَ الْحَقَّ بِالْبَاطِلِ ("O People of the Book, why do you cloak the truth in falsehood") (3:71).
Abū Jaʿfar said: He — exalted be His praise — means thereby: O people of the Torah and the Gospel. "Why do you cloak" — He says: why do you mix "the truth with falsehood".
* * *
Their mixing of the truth with falsehood consisted in this, that with their tongues they brought forth the affirmation of Muḥammad (the Prophet ﷺ) and of what he brought from Allah, while that was other than what lived in their hearts of Judaism and Christianity.
As:
7223 - Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Abī Muḥammad, on the authority of ʿIkrima or Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ṣayyif, ʿAdī ibn Zayd and al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAwf said to one another: Come, let us believe in the morning in what has been sent down to Muḥammad and his companions, and disbelieve in it in the evening (kāfir), so that we make their religion unclear to them; perhaps then they will do as we do, and turn away from their religion! Then Allah — mighty and exalted is He — sent down concerning them: "O People of the Book, why do you cloak the truth in falsehood", up to His word: وَاللَّهُ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ ("And Allah is all-encompassing, all-knowing").
7224 - Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: "O People of the Book, why do you cloak the truth in falsehood" — He says: why do you cloak Judaism and Christianity in Islam, while you know that the religion of Allah, of which He accepts no other, is Islam, and that one is rewarded with nothing but it?
7225 - Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Isḥāq related to us, saying: Ibn Abī Jaʿfar related to us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ, with the same purport — except that he said: that of which He accepts from no one anything else, is Islam — and he did not say: "and one is rewarded with nothing but it".
7226 - Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, his word: "O People of the Book, why do you cloak the truth in falsehood" — Islam in Judaism and Christianity.
* * *
Others said concerning that what follows here:
7227 - Yūnus related this to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning the word of Allah — mighty and exalted is He: "why do you cloak the truth in falsehood", he said: "the truth" is the Torah which Allah sent down to Moses, and "the falsehood" is that which they wrote with their own hands.
* * *
Abū Jaʿfar said: We have already previously set forth the meaning of "the cloaking" (al-labs), in a manner that makes repetition unnecessary.

The explanation of His word: وَتَكْتُمُونَ الْحَقَّ وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ ("and you conceal the truth while you know") (3:71).
Abū Jaʿfar said: He — exalted be His praise — means thereby: and why do you conceal, O People of the Book, the truth?
* * *
And "the truth" which they concealed is: what stood in their Books concerning the description of Muḥammad (the Prophet ﷺ), his mission and his prophethood. As:
7227 - Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, his word: "and you conceal the truth while you know" — they concealed the affair of Muḥammad, while they found him recorded with them in the Torah and the Gospel: he commands them the good and forbids them the reprehensible.
7229 - Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Isḥāq related to us, saying: Ibn Abī Jaʿfar related to us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ, his word: "and you conceal the truth while you know" — he says: they conceal the affair of Muḥammad (the Prophet ﷺ), while they find him recorded with them in the Torah and the Gospel: he commands them the good and forbids them the reprehensible.
7230 - Al-Qāsim related to me, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj: "you conceal the truth" — Islam, and the affair of Muḥammad (the Prophet ﷺ) — "while you know" that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah, and that the religion is Islam.

As for His word: "while you know", He means thereby: while you know that what you conceal of the truth is truly true, and that it comes from Allah. This word of Allah — mighty and exalted is He — is a report about the deliberate disbelief of the People of the Book therein, and about their concealing of what they already knew of the prophethood of Muḥammad (the Prophet ﷺ), which they found in their Books and which their prophets brought to them.
