The discourse on the explanation of His exalted saying: بَلِ اللَّهُ مَوْلاكُمْ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ النَّاصِرِينَ (150) (Nay, Allah is your Protector, and He is the best of helpers) (150)
Abū Jaʿfar said: He — exalted be His mention — means thereby: that it is Allah who keeps you upon the straight path, O believers, and who guards you against obeying those who disbelieve.

It was said only "nay, Allah is your Protector," because in His saying إِنْ تُطِيعُوا الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يَرُدُّوكُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِكُمْ (if you obey those who disbelieve, they will turn you back upon your heels) there lies a prohibition for them against obeying them. So it is as though He said: O you who believe, do not obey those who disbelieve, lest they turn you back upon your heels; then He began a new statement and said: "nay, Allah is your Protector," so obey Him, and not those who disbelieve, for He is the best of those who help. For this reason the name "Allah" is placed in the nominative; and had it been in the accusative, with the meaning of: nay, obey Allah, your Protector, and not those who disbelieve = then that would have been a correct manner as well.

And He means by His saying "nay, Allah is your Protector": your Ally and your Helper against your enemies who disbelieve, = "and He is the best of helpers," not those to whom you have fled among the Jews and the people of disbelief in Allah. So seek your refuge with Allah, who is your Helper and your Protector, and ask Him for help, and none other than Him among those who plot evil against you and assail you with misfortune. As:
8001 — Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq: "nay, Allah is your Protector," if what you say with your tongues is truthful in your hearts = "and He is the best of helpers," that is to say: so seek your refuge with Him and do not seek help from any other than Him, and do not turn back upon your heels as apostates from your religion.
