The explanation of His saying: وَلا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ تَفَرَّقُوا وَاخْتَلَفُوا مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَهُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ وَأُولَئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ (105) ("And be not like those who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them; for them there is a tremendous punishment.") (3:105)
Abū Jaʿfar said: By this He means, exalted is His praise: "And be not" — O community of those who believe — "like those who became divided" among the People of the Book "and differed" concerning the religion of Allah, His command and His prohibition, "after the clear proofs had come to them," from the proofs of Allah, regarding that about which they differed. They knew the truth concerning it, but they deliberately strove to oppose it; they went against the command of Allah and broke His covenant and His pact, out of audacity toward Allah. "And for these there is" — that is to say: and for these who became divided and differed among the People of the Book after it had come to them — "a punishment" from Allah, "tremendous." He says, exalted is His praise: So do not become divided, O community of believers, in your religion as these became divided in their religion, and do not do as they did, and do not make their conduct a custom in your religion, lest there befall you the like of the tremendous punishment from Allah that befalls them. As:
7598 — Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Isḥāq related to us, saying: Ibn Abī Jaʿfar related to us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ, concerning His saying: "And be not like those who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them," he said: These are the People of the Book. Allah forbade the people of Islam to become divided and to differ, as the People of the Book became divided and differed. Allah, Mighty and Exalted, said: "And for them there is a tremendous punishment."
7599 — Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: ʿAbdallāh ibn Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya ibn Ṣāliḥ related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭalḥa, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His saying: "And be not like those who became divided and differed" — and similar statements in the Qurʾān: Allah, exalted is His praise, commanded the believers to unity (al-jamāʿa) and forbade them differences and division, and informed them that those who were before them perished only through disputation and contention over the religion of Allah.
7600 — Muḥammad ibn Sinān related to me, saying: Abū Bakr al-Ḥanafī related to us, on the authority of ʿAbbād, on the authority of al-Ḥasan, concerning His saying: "And be not like those who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them, and for them there is a tremendous punishment," he said: These are the Jews and the Christians.
