Those who exercised patience under the persecution of the polytheists (mushrikīn) in this world, and under what they had to endure from them, and who exercised patience in rendering obedience to Allah and in that which pleases Him, and in the struggle against His enemies — And upon their Lord they place their trust (wa-ʿalā Rabbihim yatawakkalūn) with regard to their sustenance and the struggle against their enemies, so that they do not shrink back before them, out of trust on their part that Allah exalts His word and weakens the cunning of the unbeliever (kāfir), and that what has been allotted to them of sustenance will never escape them.
