Indeed, we will bring down on the people of this city punishment from the sky because they have been defiantly disobedient."

The statement concerning the explanation of His word, the Exalted: إِنَّا مُنْزِلُونَ عَلَى أَهْلِ هَذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ رِجْزًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ بِمَا كَانُوا يَفْسُقُونَ (34) ("We shall send down upon the inhabitants of this town a plague from heaven, because they used to act corruptly.")
Allah, whose praise is exalted, says, reporting what the messengers said to Lūṭ: إنَّا مُنـزلُونَ ("We shall send down"), O Lūṭ, عَلى أَهْلِ هَذِهِ القَرْيَةِ ("upon the inhabitants of this town"), Sadūm, رِجْزًا مِنَ السَّماءِ ("a plague from heaven") — meaning thereby: a punishment.
As Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: إِنَّا مُنـزلُونَ عَلَى أَهْلِ هَذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ رِجْزًا ("We shall send down upon the inhabitants of this town a plague") — that is to say: a punishment.
And we have already explained the meaning of al-rijz and the statements that the people of interpretation have made concerning it in what preceded, in a manner that absolves us from repeating it in this place.
And His word: بِمَا كَانُوا يَفْسُقُونَ ("because they used to act corruptly") — he says: because they committed disobedience to Allah and perpetrated the abomination.
