Tabari

Tafseer of The Spider · Al-Ankaboot · 29:13

But they will surely carry their [own] burdens and [other] burdens along with their burdens, and they will surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about what they used to invent.

The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: وَلَيَحْمِلُنَّ أَثْقَالَهُمْ وَأَثْقَالا مَعَ أَثْقَالِهِمْ وَلَيُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَمَّا كَانُوا يَفْتَرُونَ ("And they shall surely bear their burdens, and burdens along with their own burdens, and they shall surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about what they used to fabricate") (29:13).

The Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says: And these polytheists (mushrikīn) who ascribe partners to Allah, who said to those who believed in Him: "Follow our way, and we shall bear your sins" — they shall surely bear the burdens of themselves and their misdeeds, as well as the burdens of those whom they led astray and turned away from the path of Allah, along with their own burdens. And they shall surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about that in which they used to deceive them in the worldly life, with their promise to them of falsehoods, and with their saying to them: "Follow our way, and we shall bear your sins" — thus fabricating thereby the lie.

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.

    Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: وَلَيَحْمِلُنَّ أَثْقَالَهُمْ ("And they shall surely bear their burdens"), that is: their sins; وَأَثْقَالا مَعَ أَثْقَالِهِمْ ("and burdens along with their own burdens") means: the sins of those whom they led astray.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His saying: وَلَيَحْمِلُنَّ أَثْقَالَهُمْ وَأَثْقَالا مَعَ أَثْقَالِهِمْ ("And they shall surely bear their burdens, and burdens along with their own burdens"). And he recited His saying: لِيَحْمِلُوا أَوْزَارَهُمْ كَامِلَةً يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَمِنْ أَوْزَارِ الَّذِينَ يُضِلُّونَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ أَلا سَاءَ مَا يَزِرُونَ ("That they may bear their burdens in full on the Day of Resurrection, as well as a portion of the burdens of those whom they lead astray without knowledge. Verily, evil is that which they bear!"). He said: This is His saying: وَأَثْقَالا مَعَ أَثْقَالِهِمْ ("and burdens along with their own burdens").
