But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

The word of Allah, the Exalted, explained: فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَجِيبُوا لَكَ فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّمَا يَتَّبِعُونَ أَهْوَاءَهُمْ وَمَنْ أَضَلُّ مِمَّنَ اتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ بِغَيْرِ هُدًى مِنَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ (50)
Allah, the Exalted may His mention be exalted, says: If these Jews who say of the Torah and the Gospel "two sorceries that support one another," and who claim that the Truth lies in something else — if they do not answer you, O Muḥammad, by bringing a Book from Allah that guides better than those two, then know that they only follow their lusts, and that what they utter and say about the two Books is a lie and falsehoods without any reality. Someone might say: did the Prophet ﷺ not already know that what the Jews and others said about the Torah and the Gospel — by calling those two sorceries — was a false and lying statement, unless they failed to answer him by bringing a Book that guides better than those two?
It has been said: this is a statement expressed in the form of an address to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but what is actually meant are the words spoken to him — namely, those to whom it was said: أَوَلَمْ يَكْفُرُوا بِمَا أُوتِيَ مُوسَى مِنْ قَبْلُ — from the disbelievers of Quraysh. For it was said to the Prophet ﷺ: "Say, O Muḥammad, to the polytheists (mushrikīn) of Quraysh: have not those who commanded you to say — if only Muḥammad had been given the like of what Mūsā was given — already, before this Qurʾān, disbelieved in what Mūsā was given? And did they not say about what was sent down upon him and upon ʿĪsā: two sorceries that support one another? Say then to them: if you are truthful that what Mūsā and ʿĪsā were given is sorcery, then bring me a Book from Allah that guides better than their two Books. And if they do not answer you in that, then make them know that they are liars, and that in their denial of Muḥammad and what he brought them from Allah they only follow the lusts of their souls, while they abandon the Truth even as they know it."
Allah, the Exalted may His mention be exalted, says: "And who is further astray from the path of right guidance and the road of correctness than one who follows his own lusts without any clarification from Allah and without a covenant from Allah, and who abandons the covenant of Allah that He imposed upon His creatures in His revelation and His sending down?" إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ — Allah, the Exalted may His mention be exalted, says: indeed, Allah does not guide the people who have transgressed the command of Allah, abandoned His obedience, denied His messenger, altered His covenant, and followed the lusts of their souls in preferring obedience to the devil over obedience to their Lord — He does not guide them to the way of attaining the Truth and the path of right guidance.
