His word وَأَتْبَعْنَاهُمْ فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنْيَا لَعْنَةً وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ — Allāh, the Exalted, says: We imposed upon Pharaoh and his people, in this worldly life, disgrace and wrath from Our side; We decreed for them therein ruin, destruction, and an evil remembrance. And on the Day of Resurrection We shall cause a further curse to follow them, with which We shall overwhelm them with lasting disgrace and an inseparable humiliation.
In accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes spoke.
Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: وَأَتْبَعْنَاهُمْ فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنْيَا لَعْنَةً وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ — he said: they were cursed in the worldly life and the Hereafter. He said: this is like His word: وَأُتْبِعُوا فِي هَذِهِ لَعْنَةً وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِئْسَ الرِّفْدُ الْمَرْفُودُ .
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, concerning his word: وَأَتْبَعْنَاهُمْ فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنْيَا لَعْنَةً وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ — "a further curse." Then he began anew and said: هُمْ مِنَ الْمَقْبُوحِينَ . His word هُمْ مِنَ الْمَقْبُوحِينَ — Allāh, the Exalted, says: they belong to the people whom Allāh has disfigured — whom He has destroyed on account of their disbelief in their Lord and their calling His messenger Mūsā, peace be upon him, a liar; He has made them an instructive lesson for whoever wishes to draw a lesson, and an admonition for whoever wishes to be admonished.
