And a man came from the farthest end of the city, running. He said, "O Moses, indeed the eminent ones are conferring over you [intending] to kill you, so leave [the city]; indeed, I am to you of the sincere advisors."

The explanation of the word of the Most High: وَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَقْصَى الْمَدِينَةِ يَسْعَى قَالَ يَا مُوسَى إِنَّ الْمَلأَ يَأْتَمِرُونَ بِكَ لِيَقْتُلُوكَ فَاخْرُجْ إِنِّي لَكَ مِنَ النَّاصِحِينَ ('And a man came from the farthest end of the city, hastening. He said: O Mūsā, the nobles are conspiring against you to kill you. So depart; I am for you one of the sincere advisers') (verse 20)
It is mentioned that the words of the Israelite were heard by someone who spread them and informed the kinsmen of the one who had been struck about them; at that moment Pharaoh sought Mūsā and gave the order to kill him. When the order for his slaying was given, a messenger came to Mūsā and informed him about what Pharaoh had commanded concerning his affair, and directed him to leave Egypt, the land of Pharaoh and his people.

Al-ʿAbbās related to me, saying: Yazīd informed us, saying: al-Aṣbagh ibn Zayd informed us, saying: al-Qāsim ibn Abī Ayyūb related to us, saying: Saʿīd ibn Jubayr related to me, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: the Copt who fought with the Israelite went to his people and informed them about what he had heard from the Israelite — his word: أَتُرِيدُ أَنْ تَقْتُلَنِي كَمَا قَتَلْتَ نَفْسًا بِالأَمْسِ — and Pharaoh sent out the executioners to kill Mūsā. They took the main road and did not fear that he could escape them; but there was a man of the followers of Mūsā at the farthest end of the city, who took a shorter way and was ahead of them in reaching Mūsā, and brought him the news.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, who said: the Copt who was the enemy of both of them informed them; and the nobles conspired to kill him; a man came from the farthest end of the city — he recited: إِنَّ ... to the end of the verse — he said: we used to say that he was the believer from the family of Pharaoh.
Mūsā related to us, saying: ʿAmr related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, who said: the Copt — meaning the Copt who fought with the Israelite — betrayed them by making public that Mūsā was the one who had killed the man; Pharaoh sought him and said: 'seize him, for he is our man'; and he said to those who were seeking him: 'seek him in the side-paths of the road, for Mūsā is a youth who does not know the way'; but Mūsā had already taken the side-paths, and the man had already come to him and informed him: إِنَّ الْمَلأ يَأْتَمِرُونَ بِكَ لِيَقْتُلُوكَ .
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, on the authority of his companions, who said: when the Copt heard the words of the Israelite to Mūsā — أَتُرِيدُ أَنْ تَقْتُلَنِي كَمَا قَتَلْتَ نَفْسًا بِالأَمْسِ — he hastened with it to the kinsmen of the slain one and said: it is Mūsā who killed your companion; had he not heard it from the Israelite, no one would have known. When Mūsā realized that they now knew it, he fled; the people pursued him but he was ahead of them. He said: and Ibn Abī Najīḥ said: the Copt hastened.
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Abū Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, who said: the Israelite said to Mūsā: أَتُرِيدُ أَنْ تَقْتُلَنِي كَمَا قَتَلْتَ نَفْسًا بِالأَمْسِ — and there was a Copt nearby who heard it and betrayed them.
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, who said: an enemy heard it and betrayed them.
As for وَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ ('and a man came'): it is mentioned that he was the believer from the family of Pharaoh, and his name is said to have been Samʿān.
Others say: his name was Shamʿūn.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, who said: the nobles of the people of Pharaoh agreed that morning to kill Mūsā because of what had reached them about him; a man came from the farthest end of the city, running — it was said that his name was Samʿān — and he said: يَا مُوسَى إِنَّ الْمَلأ يَأْتَمِرُونَ بِكَ لِيَقْتُلُوكَ فَاخْرُجْ إِنِّي لَكَ مِنَ النَّاصِحِينَ .
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Abū Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, who said: وَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَقْصَى الْمَدِينَةِ يَسْعَى — toward Mūsā — قَالَ يَا مُوسَى إِنَّ الْمَلأ يَأْتَمِرُونَ بِكَ لِيَقْتُلُوكَ فَاخْرُجْ إِنِّي لَكَ مِنَ النَّاصِحِينَ .
As for مِنْ أَقْصَى الْمَدِينَةِ ('from the farthest end of the city'): he says: from the farthest end of the city of Pharaoh; يَسْعَى — he says: he hastened.
As al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj: وَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَقْصَى الْمَدِينَةِ يَسْعَى — he said: he hastened, not running at full speed.
As for قَالَ يَا مُوسَى إِنَّ الْمَلأ يَأْتَمِرُونَ بِكَ لِيَقْتُلُوكَ ('he said: O Mūsā, the nobles are conspiring against you to kill you'): the Most High says: the man who had come quickly from the farthest end of the city said to Mūsā: 'O Mūsā, the noblemen and leaders of the people of Pharaoh are plotting your death, taking counsel and deliberating about you.' To this belongs the word of the poet:
'What you contrive in our affair — your command is in your right hand or your left.'
That is, what you are considering and intending. And to this belongs the word of al-Namr ibn Tawlab:
'I see that the people have adopted a new custom, and concerning every newcomer counsel is taken.'
That is, it is deliberated upon and considered.
As for فَاخْرُجْ إِنِّي لَكَ مِنَ النَّاصِحِينَ ('so depart; I am for you one of the sincere advisers'): he says: leave this city; I am, in my advising you to leave it, one of the sincere advisers for you.
