Allah the Exalted says: وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى النَّاسِ — "And indeed, your Lord is full of grace toward mankind" — that is to say: O Muḥammad, your Lord possesses grace (faḍl) toward mankind, in that He does not bring upon them hasty punishment for their disobedience to Him and their disbelief (kufr) in Him. He shows them His favor in that and in other bestowals of grace which He has granted them. وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لا يَشْكُرُونَ — "but most of them are not grateful" — they do not thank Him for that favor and that grace which He has shown them, so as to devote worship exclusively to Him. Rather, they add into the worship of Him that which harms them and does not benefit them, and that which possesses toward them neither grace nor favor.
