﴿لَقَدْ وُعِدْنَا هَذَا نَحْنُ وَآبَاؤُنَا مِنْ قَبْلُ﴾ (This has indeed been promised to us, and to our forefathers before us): he says: this was promised to us by people who made promises before Muḥammad, and the same was promised to our forefathers — but we have not witnessed the reality of it nor perceived its truth; ﴿إِنْ هَذَا إِلا أَسَاطِيرُ الأَوَّلِينَ﴾ (this is nothing but the fables of the ancients): he says: they said: this is only what the ancients wrote down in their books as fabrications, recorded therein and spoke about, without it possessing any reality.
