وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ مَطَرًا (And We rained down upon them a rain) — that is Allah's sending down upon them of stones of baked clay from the sky — فَسَاءَ مَطَرُ الْمُنْذَرِينَ (and how evil was the rain of those who had been warned): he says: How evil was that rain — the rain of the people whom Allah had warned of His punishment on account of their disobedience to Him, and whom He had made to fear His mighty power by sending the messenger to them with that.
