Abū Jaʿfar said: We have already set forth, in earlier parts of this our book, the discussion of what occurs of the disconnected letters of the alphabet (ḥurūf al-muʿjam) at the openings of the sūras, and His word طس is among them. It has been related from Ibn ʿAbbās that His word طس is an oath by which Allah has sworn, and that it is among the names of Allah.
ʿAlī ibn Dāwūd related to me, saying: ʿAbdullāh ibn Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word طس : an oath by which Allah has sworn; it is among the names of Allah.
According to this view, its meaning must be: By the All-Hearing, the All-Subtle (al-Samīʿ al-Laṭīf) — these are the aforementioned signs of revelation (āyāt) which I have sent down to you, O Muḥammad; they are indeed the signs of the Qurʾān and the signs of a clear Book. That is to say: it makes clear to whoever contemplates it and reflects upon it with understanding that it is from Allah, that He has sent it down to you; you did not yourself invent it, nor did you say it on your own authority, nor has anyone else of Allah's creatures done so — for no creature is able to produce anything like it, even if the jinn and mankind were to conspire together to do so. And His word وَكِتَابٍ مُبِينٍ stands in the genitive as a conjunction with "the Qurʾān."
