And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

Abū Jaʿfar said: We have given preference to the view that we have chosen in this place, because the word وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ (And indeed, your Lord — He is the Almighty, the Merciful) follows upon Allah's threat against a people of polytheists and deniers of the Resurrection, who had not been destroyed — so that it cannot be interpreted as a report from Allah concerning His act against them and His destruction of them. Perhaps Ibn Jurayj, by his statement, meant this — that is, that this was the case when it followed upon Allah's report concerning His destruction of those whom He had destroyed among the nations; and that — if Allah wills — is so when it followed upon their report in this manner.
