And His statement: وَاجْعَلْ لِي لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِي الآخِرِينَ (And appoint for me a truthful mention among the later generations) — he says: and establish for me among the people a fair remembrance and a goodly praise, enduring among those generations who will come after me.
In accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes likewise spoke.
Mention of those who said that:
Al-Qāsim related to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn related to us, he said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Abū Bakr, on the authority of ʿIkrimah, concerning his statement: وَاجْعَلْ لِي لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِي الآخِرِينَ — concerning the statement: وَآتَيْنَاهُ أَجْرَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا (And We gave him his reward in this world). He said: Allah favored him with the bond of friendship (al-khulla) when He took him as a friend; and he asked Allah and said: وَاجْعَلْ لِي لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِي الآخِرِينَ so that the nations would not deny me; and Allah granted him that — for the Jews believed in Mūsā but rejected ʿĪsā, and the Christians believed in ʿĪsā but rejected Muḥammad ﷺ, while all of them regard Ibrāhīm as their leader. The Jews said: he is the friend of Allah and he belongs to us; but Allah severed their bond with him after they had acknowledged his prophethood and believed in him, and said: مَا كَانَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَهُودِيًّا وَلا نَصْرَانِيًّا وَلَكِنْ كَانَ حَنِيفًا مُسْلِمًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ (Ibrāhīm was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was an upright Muslim and was not among the polytheists). Then He joined his bond of friendship to you and said: إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ وَهَذَا النَّبِيُّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَاللَّهُ وَلِيُّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (Indeed, the people most deserving of Ibrāhīm are those who followed him, and this Prophet and those who believed — and Allah is the Protector of the believers). This is his reward that was paid to him in advance — the good, when He says: وَآتَيْنَاهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً (And We gave him in this world the good) — and that is the truthful mention which he had asked of his Lord.
Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said, concerning his statement: وَاجْعَلْ لِي لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِي الآخِرِينَ — he said: the truthful mention is the honorable remembrance, the goodly praise, and the honorable memory among the later people, among the nations.
