Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid: وَمَا أَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنْذِرُونَ * ذِكْرَى — he said: "The messengers." Ibn Jurayj said: His word ذِكْرَى — he said: "The messengers."

His word: وَمَا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ — He says: "We were not unjust toward them by punishing and destroying them, for We destroyed them only after they had rebelled against Us, were ungrateful for Our favor, and worshipped others besides Us, and this after the proof had been established against them and the warning had been directed to them, and the evidences had been set before them one after another in succession — making clear that they ought not to do this — yet they refused all the same and persisted in straying."
