And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"

فَيَقُولُوا — when it suddenly overtakes them — هَلْ نَحْنُ مُنْظَرُونَ — that is to say: "Will the punishment be lifted from us and will our lifespan be extended, so that we may repent and turn to Allah from our shirk (the attributing of partners to Allah) and our disbelief in Allah, and return to faith in Him and direct ourselves toward obedience to Him?"
