So cause to fall upon us fragments of the sky, if you should be of the truthful."

"If you are truthful in what you say, that you are the Messenger of Allah as you claim, فَأَسْقِطْ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ — that is to say: pieces of the sky. Al-kisaf is the plural of kisfa, formed as a plural on the analogy of how tamra has tamr as its plural.
And with a meaning similar to what we have said concerning this, the exegetes spoke.
Mention of those who said that:
ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to us, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: كِسَفًا — he said: "pieces."
It was related to me via al-Ḥusayn, saying: I heard Abū Muʿādh saying: ʿUbayd informed us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk saying, concerning His word: كِسَفًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ — "a side of the sky."
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word: فَأَسْقِطْ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ — he said: "a corner of the sky, the punishment of that piece."
