And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

And the punishment of Allah which Sāliḥ had announced to them struck them and destroyed them. إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَةً — he says: indeed, in the destruction of Thamūd on account of what they had done — the hamstringing of the she-camel of Allah and the transgression of the command of Allah's prophet Sāliḥ — there is truly a lesson for whoever takes a lesson from it, O Muḥammad, from your people. وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ — he says: and most of them will not believe, according to the foreknowledge of Allah.
