The people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear Allah?"

His word: ("Will they then not fear Allah?") — He says: will they then not fear the punishment of Allah on account of their disbelief in Him? The meaning of the sentence is: the people of Pharaoh — so say to them: will they then not fear Allah? The words "so say to them" have been omitted because the context points to it. The reason why it is written "will they fear" (yattaqūna) with the third person masculine singular, and not "will you fear" (tattaqūna) with the second person, is that the revelation preceded the direct address. But if the reading with the second person (tattaqūna) were to come, then that too would be correct, just as it is written: قُلْ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا سَيُغْلَبُونَ (Say to those who disbelieve: they will be overcome) and also سَتُغْلَبُونَ (you will be overcome).
