Abū Jaʿfar said: We have mentioned elsewhere in this book the disagreements of those who differed concerning the disconnected letters (ḥurūf al-hijāʾ) with which the openings of the sūras of the Qurʾān begin, as well as the evidence which each authority adduced for his statement and view. We have also explained which statement is the most fitting in this regard — in a manner that makes it unnecessary to repeat it here. Concerning the two letters طسم and طس , the same disagreements have been mentioned as concerning الم , المر and المص .
ʿAlī ibn Dāwūd related to me, saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word طسم — he said: it is an oath which Allah has sworn, and it belongs to the names of Allah.
Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word طسم — he said: a name among the names of the Qurʾān.
