Or do you think that most of them hear or reason? They are not except like livestock. Rather, they are [even] more astray in [their] way.

Allah — exalted be His praise — means: أَرَأَيْتَ — O Muḥammad — مَنِ اتَّخَذَ إِلَهَهُ his desire which he follows. This is because a man from among the polytheists used to worship a stone; if he saw a more beautiful one, he would throw the first away and take the other to worship it. Thus his idol and his god were whatever he himself chose for himself. That is why Allah — exalted be His renown — said: أَرَأَيْتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ إِلَهَهُ هَوَاهُ أَفَأَنْتَ تَكُونُ عَلَيْهِ وَكِيلا — Allah — exalted be His praise — says: Are you, O Muḥammad, a guardian over this man in his deeds, despite the enormity of his ignorance?
