Allah — exalted be His praise — informs about these polytheists who mocked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: that when they saw him, they would say: "This one almost seduced us away from our gods whom we worship, and would have turned us away from worshipping them — had it not been that we persevered and remained steadfast in their worship." وَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ حِينَ يَرَوْنَ الْعَذَابَ — Allah — exalted be His renown — says: It will become clear to them when they behold with their own eyes the punishment of Allah which has descended upon them for their worship of the gods — مَنْ أَضَلُّ سَبِيلا — He says: Who has trodden the way that is not the way of guidance, and who has walked the path of ruin — you or they.
In accordance with what we have said concerning the explanation of His statement لَوْلا أَنْ صَبَرْنَا عَلَيْهَا spoke the exegetes.
Mention of who said that:
Al-Qāsim related to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn related to us, he said: Ḥajjāj related to us, from Ibn Jurayj — concerning إِنْ كَادَ لَيُضِلُّنَا عَنْ آلِهَتِنَا لَوْلا أَنْ صَبَرْنَا عَلَيْهَا — he said: "We had remained steadfast in it."
