الْمُلْكُ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْحَقُّ لِلرَّحْمَنِ — that is to say: true sovereignty on that Day belongs exclusively to the All-Merciful (al-Raḥmān), and no one else shares in it, and the kingdoms on that Day have perished except for His. In the worldly life there were kings, but all sovereignty has perished on that Day except for the sovereignty of the Almighty. وَكَانَ يَوْمًا عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ عَسِيرًا — that is to say: the Day on which the heaven is split asunder by the cloud is for those who disbelieve in Allah a difficult day — that is to say: harsh and severe.
