Allah the Exalted says: وَأَقِيمُوا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ الصَّلاةَ — perform the ritual prayer (al-ṣalāh), O people, observing its prescribed bounds (ḥudūd), and do not let it go to waste — وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ — the obligatory alms (al-zakāh) which Allah has made incumbent upon you and which is due to those entitled to it — and obey the Messenger of your Lord in what he has commanded you and forbidden you — لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ ("that you may be shown mercy"): that is to say, that your Lord may show you mercy and thereby save you from His punishment.
